University researchers create app to extend Android battery life by up to 25 percent

Researchers at the University of Waterloo have figured out a way for Android multitaskers to get 25 percent more time out of a battery charge, though the particular scenario that takes advantage of this isn't a common one. And as Engadget reports, this battery saving has a few caveats.
extend Android battery life by up to 25 percent
If you're one of the chosen few to have Android 9 Pie running on your phone right now, then you have split-screen support, which is where Waterloo's "MultiDroid" app comes into play, although it has yet to be released to the public. In a nutshell, the app works by dimming the side of the screen that you're not interacting with at that moment.

As any mobile geek can tell you, simply having the screen on will be one of the biggest drains on your battery, second only to rendering 3D or VR, which remains challenging even for desktop and laptop PCs. According to the university, being able to selectively dim areas of the screen can extend your battery charge by 10 to 25 percent.

Note: This battery-saving technique only works with OLED screens, which are customarily reserved for expensive phone models.

Interested readers can check out the university's full report at the IEEE Access website.

But what are the odds that you'll get Android Pie?

While Android 9 is currently only available on Google's Pixel phones and the Essential PH-1, dozens of other devices are scheduled to be updated. Motorola currently leads the pack with eight, Sony is purportedly readying six phones, and Samsung has committed to Pie updates for its high-end models like the Galaxy S9 and Note 9.

Despite Google's recent inroads with Motorola and Sony, it continues to struggle overall with getting manufacturers and mobile network carriers to update older phones and launch new devices with the latest version of their operating system.

Android Oreo took eight months to come to the Galaxy Note 8, and one year to come to the Galaxy S8. Samsung has not committed to release dates for Android Pie updates on any of their devices. The Galaxy Note 9 came out earlier this month sporting 8.1 Oreo, just as 9.0 Pie was reaching store shelves.

According to Google's own statistics, only 12 percent of their phones are running Android Oreo, which came out last year; 30 percent of phones are still on the version before that, and 24 percent are still on Marshmallow, which was released to the general public nearly three years ago.

For reference, Apple states that over 80 percent of its users are on iOS 11, and only 14 percent remain on iOS 10. (iOS 12 is currently available in a public beta; a final version is expected next month.) Granted, Apple has far fewer devices to deal with, and it makes a lot of its own chips, so it's much less reliant on third parties for software updates. But the contrast remains stark.

In Summary:
Researchers at the University of Waterloo have designed an app that can extend your battery charge by up to 25 percent, although it currently only works with Android Pie and OLED screens.
Only a small handful of phones are currently running Android Pie, as Google continues to struggle with getting manufacturers and mobile network carriers to update older phones and launch new devices with the latest version of their operating system.

WhatsApp to Offer Unlimited Back-up Storage With Google Drive

Starting November 12, 2018, WhatsApp backups will no longer count towards the Google Drive storage quota. Furthermore, WhatsApp backups that haven't been updated in more than one year will be automatically removed from Google Drive storage. Also, all WhatsApp backups that haven’t been updated in more than one year will be automatically removed from Google Drive storage, so make sure you manually back up your WhatsApp data by November 12 if you don’t want to lose it.
WhatsApp to Offer Unlimited Back-up Storage
You can back up your chats and media to Google Drive, so if you change Android phones or get a new one, your chats and media are transferable. We recommend connecting your phone to Wi-Fi prior to backing up your chats via Google Drive, as backup files can vary in size and consume mobile data, causing additional charges.

Minimum requirements

In order to use Google Drive backup, you need to have:

A Google account activated on your phone
Google Play services installed on your phone
Note: Google Play services are only available for Android 2.3.4 and higher.
Enough free space on your phone to create the backup

Creating a Google Drive backup

How to create a Google Drive backup:
Open WhatsApp.
Tap Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
Tap Back up to Google Drive and select a backup frequency other than Never.
Select a Google account that you'll back up your chat history to. If you don't have a Google account, tap Add account when prompted and enter your login credentials. Please remember the Google account you're using for the backup.
Tap Back up over to choose the network you wish to use for backup. Please note that backing up over a cellular data network might result in additional data charges.
You can also manually back up your chats to Google Drive at any time:
Open WhatsApp.
Tap Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
Tap BACK UP to begin your Google Drive backup. This process might take a few minutes.
Note: Depending on the size of the chat, the first complete backup could take a while. We recommend that you connect your phone to a power source. However, subsequent backups are incremental, thus not requiring a completely new backup of all your data every time.

Important: Media and messages you back up aren't protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption while in Google Drive.

Restoring from a Google Drive backup

In order to successfully restore a Google Drive backup, you need to use the same phone number and Google account used to create the backup. To restore your backup:

Make sure the same Google account that was used to perform the backup has been added to your phone.
Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
After verifying your phone number, you'll be prompted to restore your chats and media from Google Drive. Tap RESTORE.
After the restoration process is complete, tap NEXT and your chats will be displayed once initialization is complete.
After restoring your chats, WhatsApp will begin restoring your media files.
Note: If you're installing WhatsApp without any prior backups from Google Drive, WhatsApp will automatically restore from your local backup file. Learn more in our FAQ on restoring chat history.

Configuring your Google Drive backup settings

To change the frequency of your Google Drive backup:
Open WhatsApp.
Tap Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
Tap Back up to Google Drive.
Set the backup frequency to your liking.
To change which account you want to back up your chat history to:
Open WhatsApp.
Tap Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
Tap Account and select the account you wish to back up your chat history to.
Note: If you change your Google account, you won't be able to access your backups that are linked to a different Google account.

To change the connection you wish to use for backup:

Open WhatsApp.
Tap Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
Tap Back up over and select the network you wish to use for backup.

Deleting your backup file from your Google account
You can remove WhatsApp data from your Google Drive. To do so:

Go to the Google Drive website and log in to your Google account.

If you're accessing the Google Drive website from your phone, you'll have to tap the Menu icon in the top left corner and then tap Desktop Version.
Click the Gear icon in the top right corner > Settings > Manage Apps.
Scroll until you find WhatsApp in the list. Please note it might take several minutes for WhatsApp to appear.
After you find WhatsApp in the list, wait until “Hidden app data” size comes up. This might also take several minutes.
Click OPTIONS > Delete hidden app data > DELETE.

Google Chrome WARNING -Horrific malware can steal YOUR credit card details

Google Chrome is a fast, secure, and free web browser, built for the modern web. It is a freeware web browser developed by Google. It was first released in September 2008, for Microsoft Windows, and was later ported to Linux, macOS, iOS and Android.

google chrome malware steals credit card details

Google Chrome users have been warned about a new strain of malware that can steal saved credit card details from the hugely popular internet browser.

Security experts from Proofpoint are putting Google Chrome fans on their hills about a malware researchers have dubbed Vega Stealer.

The malware is a variant of the August Stealer strain that was discovered back in December 2016.

That piece of malicious software was capable of stealing saved passwords, documents and sensitive data from Chrome, Firefox, Skype and Opera.

The Vega Stealer malware is being distributed through a spam e-mail campaign.

It tries to trick people into clicking on it with subject lines likes “online store developer required”.

The e-mail includes a Microsoft document called “brief.doc” that contains malicious macros that deliver the Vega Stealer payload.

Speaking about the malware in a blog post, Proofpoint researchers said: “The document macro utilised in this campaign is a commodity macro that we believe is for sale and used by multiple actors, including the threat actor spreading Emotet banking Trojan.”

Once Vega Stealer has infected a computer it starts stealing data and searches the victim’s desktop for different file formats.

This is done for exfiltration purposes and then the malware sends the data to a remote command and control server.

Proofpoint added: “While Vega Stealer is not the most complex or stealthy malware in circulation today, it demonstrates the flexibility of malware, authors, and actors, to achieve criminal objectives.

“Because the delivery mechanism is similar to more widely distributed and mature threats, Vega Stealer has the potential to evolve into a commonly found stealer.
“Vega Stealer…could have longer lasting impacts if further developed and distributed. Due to the distribution and lineage, this threat may continue to evolve and grow.”

As always, one of the best ways to stay safe from malware delivered by e-mail is not to click on suspicious looking messages with attachments.

This is especially the case if the e-mail is allegedly from a well-known company but the e-mail is not registered to their official domain.

The news comes as Google Chrome continues to hold onto its crown of the world’s most popular internet browser.

'Take a Break' Feature For YouTubers to Help deal with Addiction

Google has rolled out a new set of controls that will allow YouTube users to set limits on their video viewing, and help them set "Take a Break" reminder from browsing the channels for too long, a media report said.

 youtube addiction

The new feature will enable the users to set a reminder for every 15, 30, 60, 90 or 180 minutes, at which point the video will pause and users will receive "Take a Break" notification that they have been binge-watching videos for longer than they decided to.

Users can then choose to dismiss the reminder and keep watching, or close the app, the TechCrunch reported late Friday. The changes announced during Google's I/O keynote will roll out in the latest update of YouTube, along with YouTube's ability to send notifications. The reminders will come with an option of being dismissed and the feature will also allow users to disable notification sounds during a specified time period each day.

The new features are first expected to hit the 13.17 and higher versions of the YouTube mobile app on both iOS and Android, the report said.

Apple AirPods Are Wonderful: See details about the New Improved Apple AirPods.

AirPods will forever change the way you use headphones. Whenever you pull your AirPods out of the charging case, they immediately turn on and connect to your iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac. Audio automatically plays as soon as you put them in your ears and pauses when you take them out.

  apple airpods 2

With 24-hour battery life and groundbreaking ease-of-use and intelligence, AirPods are wireless headphones unlike any other.

After meeting with several companies in Asia, an analyst from Barclay suggests Apple AirPods unit shipments will likely hit 30 million sales in 2018. Apple is reportedly planning to release new AirPods with Siri integration and the new Apple AirPods will be water resistant. According to reports, these wireless earphones will come with better noise cancellation.

Siri integration is important because it will significantly change the way people use the voice assistant on AirPods. The new model coming later this year or in early 2019 will have always-on Siri functionality. It means users won’t have to tap the earphone to activate the voice assistant. With just a command “Hey Siri”, the voice assistant will start working. It is the same way how people activate Siri on an iPhone and a HomePod speaker without having to physically tap the device.

Apple has also designed an upgraded Bluetooth chip for the new AirPods and this chip will be managing wireless connection on the earphones. The current model of AirPods sports a chip called W1 and with the Apple Watch last year, the company introduced its own chip named W2.
Water resistant AirPods will not survive if you submerge them in the water, but they are likely going to survive splashes, just like how the iPhone 8 does. There’s still no official word about the same. But Apple has already designed smartwatches that can be submerged into the water, so it’s too early to say the company won’t do the same with updated AirPods.

After iPhone, wearables account for the speedy revenue growth for Apple and the company is expecting this category to grow in the future. Apple already confirmed it will release an upgraded version of the AirPods case. These cases will enable wireless charging for the Apple AirPods and just like how iPhone X users charge their phone, AirPods cases will do the same. Apple is also working on AR headsets and the company will likely introduce the product sometime in 2020.

The updated Apple AirPods will reportedly come with noise-cancellation. If it happens, we can either see a minor change in the design or maybe the company will make sure adding extra comfort and better fitting by making some changes in the earbuds. There are fewer chances of active noise cancellation this time.

People are satisfied with the current model of the AirPods, but adding more comfort and grip to make AirPods fit for everyone, and making improvements and design changes is great. No need of physical tapping will surely make users’ life easier because it will reduce the risk of accidental drops. Giving AirPods splash resistance ability will help joggers, gym goers, and travelers who don’t want the costly pair to be damaged by sweat or raindrops.

As far as the release of improved Apple AirPods is concerned, some analysts suggest Apple will release the new AirPods in early 2019. There are also reports about the new model of the wireless headphones coming in late 2018. Since Apple has not confirmed anything about the release of its new AirPods, it’s better to take such information with a pinch of salt.

What seems believable and realistic is Apple will introduce an improved version of AirPods. The company has seen tremendous growth in demand for its wearables and AirPods play a major role in this area. In terms of delivering true wireless music experience, these earphones stand strong and account for 85 percent of total wireless headphone sales in the U.S. It is huge in itself.

All the groundbreaking things AirPods can do are driven by the custom-designed Apple W1 chip. It produces extremely efficient wireless for a better connection and improved sound. And the W1 chip manages battery life so well, you can listen for 5 hours on a single charge.2 It’s performance that’s unheard of in a device this small.

Want your smartphone to have a good battery-life? Start charging it the right way

If you want to get the most use out of your phone between charges, you can't go wrong with these tips to Start charging your smartphones the right way.

best way to charge a phone

You know how much you rely on your phone. It’s no wonder that robust battery life means more to you than you ever thought possible.

This might come as a shock, but most of you have been charging the phones and tablets the wrong way.

You must have heard or read on WhatsApp about phone on overnight charging exploding and causing injuries or death to the user while the person was asleep. Well don't worry, the overnight charging wouldn't do that to your phone, but it is also not recommended, according to the findings of Cadax , a company that offers devices that test smartphone and other batteries.

According to Battery University, which the company runs for free, the phone needs to charged in short bursts and not too frequently, if you want to a good overall battery life.

It doesn't matter if you only charge up 10% or 20% as, according to Battery University: "Partial charges cause no harm."

Also, if you want to lessen the wear and tear to your battery, do not hit the red zone, which is 15 per cent in most of the phones.

Try to keep the device between 65% and 75% -- "the sweet spot", according to the website.

Many of you might be thinking that "hey, I don't have a desk job. I won't be around a wall socket all the time." Well in that case lay your hands on a power bank.

The experts have also recommended that never ever, never ever, never ever charge your battery fully.

Try to keep it around 95 and you are good to go.

Why you ask?

Well, that's because today's modern lithium-ion batteries do "not need to be fully charged, nor is it desirable to do so."

The website states: "In fact, it is better not to fully charge, because a high voltage stresses the battery".

And now, the last point, which may confuse you.
'You don't need to remove the charger when it's full'

What? 'I just read something on the contrary'. Well, yes you are right. But, if it so happens that you have left your phone on charging and it has hit the 100% mark, then the charger, according to the website, will automatically turn off.

Still, it is recommended that you avoid leaving your phone on overnight charging, hitting the 100 per cent mark and inculcate the habit of juicing up the device frequently and in small doses.

NCC Imposes N500,000 Fine on Networks that Violate DND Instructions

The Do-Not-Disturb service allows Telco customers to opt out of receiving promotional messages for 3rd Party services (Bulk SMS, VAS promos, etc.)

      dnd ncc fines telcos

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC has imposed a N500,000 fine on telcos that disregard the  Do-Not-Disturb (DND) instructions. Mr. Philip Eretan, Deputy Director, Licensing and Authorization at the NCC, issued the warning on Thursday. Mr. Eretan spoke at the Telecom Consumer Parliament.

This news is a big step in combating the long-standing issue of unsolicited calls and messaging.

Why is this an Issue?

Unsolicited messages (also known as Value Added Services) are a constant feature for Nigerian telecom subscribers. Value Added Services help share information about products and services that consumers could find useful. Of course, this is not peculiar to telcos, banking, education and many other sectors also employ the use of unsolicited messages.

However, the feature is being heavily abused. Nigerians have constantly been harassed with unsolicited messages from various service providers. Characteristically, the telecom operators themselves send out the most messages. Messages about low credit, data offers, new services, and caller tunes offers have completely taken over the inbox of most users.

The only way out is to block spam messages is to activate the DND feature. DND blocks unsolicited text messages about promos and services. And according to the NCC, the DND feature is active on 9 million telecom subscriptions.

NCC fines the DND feature is active
However there’s one problem: DND doesn’t block spam messages from telecom operators. Exploiting this, telecom operators in the country have continued to molest subscribers with needless messages.

NCC’s Fine Could Restore Normalcy to DND

To correct the situation of unsolicited calls, the NCC has imposed a 500,000 fine on telecommunication companies that violate DND instructions. The new fine would help strike a balance between providing useful value added services and controlling the flow of unwanted messages. As a matter of fact, NCC boss, Prof. Umar Danbatta has said consumers who activate the feature and telcos must observe the DND instruction.

Of course, it would be interesting to see how this imposition of fine plays out. But considering the huge N1.2tr fine NCC imposed on MTN two years ago, telecommunication companies would want to be cautious.

Google open sources its 3D audio kit for VR and AR

Google has been letting loose open sourcing stuff lately so that anybody can freely use or modify it. First, it was the tech behind Portrait Mode, and now its the spatial audio SDK Resonance Audio.

Google resonance audio
Resonance Audio was launched last year and is aimed at making it easier for developers to deliver more convincing surround sound experiences in their VR and AR apps. The kit is based on Google's multi-platform VR Audio SDK, but really tries to improve on its foundation and make cross-platform development a lot easier with platform-specific documentation on how to implement all features properly.

Now that Resonance Audio has been open sourced, developers can freely integrate it into their projects to make cross-platform developing of AR/VR experiences a lotsimpler.
> "To accelerate adoption of immersive audio technology and strengthen the developer community around it, we’re opening Resonance Audio to a community-driven development model. By creating an open source spatial audio project optimized for mobile and desktop computing, any platform or software development tool provider can easily integrate with Resonance Audio. More cross-platform and tooling support means more distribution opportunities for content creators, without the worry of investing in costly porting projects."

For the uninitiated, Resonance Audio is Google’s take on 3D surround audio, and it takes the form of a special toolkit and SDK that can be integrated into the popular Unity 3D development suite. Resonance Audio uses Ambisonic technology to essentially figure out how best to realistically optimize audio in a 3D space according to its source and surroundings, making a scene like whispering to a fellow audience member during a VR concert extremely realistic. Different sound sources can mesh in real time in a 3D environment, and objects and environment boundaries can affect the way that sound travels, blends, and fades. All of these factors come together to create extremely realistic spatial audio that can work with just about any 3D project, including VR and AR content.

Gear VR and Daydream users may have already experienced Resonance Audio in recent apps like Pixar's Coco VR, Disney's Star Wars: Jedi Challenges AR, and Runaway's Flutter VR.

Chrome begins Blocking annoying ads based on the Better Ads Standards

While most advertisements on the web is aware of client encounter, throughout the years, chrome has progressively gotten notification from clients that some promotions can be especially meddling. As was reported last June, Chrome will handle this issue by expelling advertisements from destinations that don't take after the Better Ads Standards. We've already talked about a portion of the points of interest encompassing how Chrome shields clients from nosy advertisements, however as we approach the dispatch date of February 15, we needed to go in the engine and examine how this component functions in more detail.
  better ads standards

What are the Better Ads Standards?

The Better Ads Standards are the consequence of open customer inquiry by the Coalition for Better Ads, an industry assembled and concentrated on enhancing clients' involvement with web based promoting. More than 40,000 web clients in North America and Europe took part in reviews where they were indicated regular advertisement encounters and requested to assess how meddlesome the encounters were. The most meddlesome advertisement encounters incorporate prestitial promotions (those full-page promotions that piece you from seeing the substance on the page) and glimmering energized promotions. More insights about the exploration and strategy can be found on the Coalition's site.

better ads standards mobile and pc

Despite the fact that a couple of the promotion encounters that disregard the Better Ads Standards are issues in the commercial itself, the larger part of risky advertisement encounters are controlled by the site proprietor —, for example, high promotion thickness or prestitial advertisements with commencement. This outcome prompted the approach Chrome takes to shield clients from a considerable lot of the meddling advertisement encounters recognized by the Better Ads Standards: assess how well locales agree to the Better Ads Standards, educate destinations of any issues experienced, give the chance to destinations to address distinguished issues, and expel promotions from locales that keep on maintaining a hazardous advertisements encounter.

Today, the Better Ads Standards comprises of 12 promotion encounters that exploration observed to be especially irritating to clients. Picture Source: Coalition for Better Ads

Assessing locales for infringement

Locales are assessed by looking at an example of pages from the site. Contingent upon what number of infringement of the Better Ads Standards are discovered, the site will be assessed as having a status of Passing, Warning, or Failing. The assessment status of destinations can be gotten to through the Ad Experience Report API. Site proprietors can likewise observe more nitty gritty outcomes, for example, the particular infringement of the Better Ads Standards that were found, by means of the Ad Experience Report in Google's Search Console. From the Report site proprietors can likewise ask for that their site be re-checked on after they have tended to the rebellious advertisement encounters.

The Ad Experience Report in Google's Search Console permits site proprietors to see their general site assessment status, and also the specifics of any infringement distinguished on their site.

Separating on destinations at the system level

At a specialized level, when a Chrome client explores to a page, Chrome's promotion channel first checks if that page has a place with a site that falls flat the Better Ads Standards. Assuming this is the case, organize asks for on the page —, for example, those for JavaScript or pictures — are checked against a rundown of known advertisement related URL designs. On the off chance that there is a match, Chrome will hinder the demand, keeping the promotion from showing on the page. This arrangement of examples depends on people in general EasyList channel leads, and incorporates designs coordinating numerous promotion suppliers including Google's own advertisement stages, AdSense and DoubleClick.

What this looks like in Chrome

how chrome blocks ads
Chrome will consequently piece promotions on destinations that fall flat the Better Ads Standards, utilizing the approach portrayed previously. At the point when no less than one Ad asked for has been blocked, Chrome will demonstrate the client a message showing that advertisement blocking has happened and in addition a choice to debilitate this setting by choosing "permit promotions on this site." For work area clients, the notice in Chrome's address bar will seem to be like Chrome's current fly up blocker. Android clients will see message in a little infobar at the base of their screen, and can tap on "points of interest" to see more data and abrogate the default setting.

Chrome will naturally square meddling promotions on locales that have been found to damage the Better Ads Standards, yet clients have the choice to cripple the component by choosing "permit advertisements on this site."

Early outcomes demonstrate positive advance for clients

While the aftereffect of this activity is that Chrome clients won't see advertisements on locales that reliably abuse the Better Ads Standards, our objective isn't to channel any promotions whatsoever yet to enhance the experience for all web clients. As of February 12, 42% of locales which were coming up short the Better Ads Standards have settled their issues and are currently passing. This is the result we were seeking after — that destinations would find a way to settle nosy promotions encounters themselves and advantage all web clients. Be that as it may, if a site keeps on keeping up resistant promotion encounters 30 days in the wake of being informed of infringement, Chrome will start to piece advertisements on that site.

We're supported by early outcomes indicating industry moves from meddling advertisement encounters, and look sending to proceeded with joint effort with the business toward a future where Chrome's promotion sifting innovation won't be required.

Security applications and service provider, SplashData, has published a list of the most frequently hacked passwords of the last year as they have always done Each December for the past seven years. The results are sadly predictable – year after year millions of us rely on simple word and number patterns, our birthdays, partner’s names, and, of course, “password” to keep our online accounts secure.

While many on the list are fairly standard (“123123”, “Password”, “admin” etcetera), there were a couple of unexpected entries, including “monkey” and “whatever”. Others were a little more topical – a very cynical (and entirely appropriate) "trustno1" snuck in at number 25 this year.

The list does have a serious purpose, though. The team at SplashData hope this list will make people think a little more about safety online and encourage users to take active steps to keep their digital data secure against hackers.

“Unfortunately, while the newest episode may be a fantastic addition to the Star Wars franchise, ‘starwars’ is a dangerous password to use,” Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData, explained in a press release.

Hackers are using common terms from pop culture and sports to break into accounts online because they know many people are using those easy-to-remember words.”

“Football” and “dragons” (a likely reference to Game of Thrones) also made the list.

Here’s the top 30:

1. 123456 (unchanged... for the fourth year in a row)
2. Password (unchanged)
3. 12345678 (up 1 from last year)
4. qwerty (up 2 from last year)
5. 12345 (down 2 from last year)
6. 123456789 (new)
7. letmein (new)
8. 1234567 (unchanged)
9. football (down 4 from last year)
10. iloveyou (new)
11. admin (up 4 from last year)
12. welcome (unchanged)
13. monkey (new)
14. login (down 3)
15. abc123 (down 1)
16. starwars (new)
17. 123123 (new)
18. dragon (up 1 from last year)
19. passw0rd (down 1 from last year)
20. master (up 1 from last year)
21. hello (new)
22. freedom (new)
23. whatever (new)
24. qazwsx (new)
25. trustno1 (new)

Please if any of these passwords are similar to yours, it may be time to switch up your passwords. Experts suggest stringing four simple but random words together. Length is key to making your password hack-proof – “correct horse battery staple”, for example, would take computer hackers 500 years to crack, plus it’s far easier to remember than a meaningless jumble of characters.

You can now pre-order apps for Apple devices

Apple has launched a simple new feature that makes it even easier to get the apps you've been waiting for. The company announced a new pre-order function that lets developers make their future releases available on the App Store up to 90 days in the future and have them automatically download to devices when they launch.

Apple says that the feature is available for free and paid apps on all of its platforms, meaning that iOS, macOS and tvOS devices are all supported (as long as they're running the most up-to-date software). Also, Apple won't take your money until the day the app is released, similar to how Amazon handles hardware pre-orders via its online store.

If a developer decides to change the price of an app before it launches, Apple will always charge whatever is lower: the price it was pre-ordered at or the cost when it becomes available.

Although the App Store has largely remained the same since its launch in July 2008, Apple has made a number of changes over the past year and a half. In June 2016, the company finally introduced subscriptions and began allowing developers to inject paid App Store listings within search results. However, there's still no option to test apps before you buy them.

Remote Desktop is now on Chrome web browser

Remote desktop refers to a software or operating system feature that allows a personal computer's desktop environment to be run remotely on one system (usually a PC, but the concept applies equally to a server), while being displayed on a separate client device. Remote desktop applications have varying features. Some allow attaching to an existing user's session (i.e., a running desktop) and "remote controlling", either displaying the remote control session or blanking the screen. Taking over a desktop remotely is a form of remote administration.

            Chrome remote desktop

Tools like remote desktop access have been invented, to help ease the pain of tech support.
Thanks to Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop, now available on the Web.
Chrome Remote Desktop actually isn’t that new. It has been around for as long as Chrome OS and Chromebooks have been around. The only difference, at least for now, is that you can use it directly in your web browser, specifically Chrome. That is, if you’re the one remotely accessing someone else’s computer.

The way it works is still the same. The other end, that is, the person whose computer you will access, will still have to be installed the Chrome Remote Desktop extension. He or she will then generate a PIN that you will use to complete the connection and have access to their computer from your side.

So why the new web browser version? That’s because the old version, which exists as a Chrome web app, will soon be gone. Google has decided that the app path isn’t exactly going as planned and will be scrapping those completely. And one of those is its own Remote Desktop app.

At the moment, the Chrome Remote Desktop is still labeled in beta, so it isn’t something you should depend on just yet. Even Google’s support pages have not yet been updated and still point to the old ways of doing things. Fortunately, that old way is still accessible and completely usable. At least until the web version rolls out in stable form.
