Google’s Family Link Is Parental Control Done Right

If you’re a parent who has young children using mobile devices that runs on Android, it is understandable that you might be concerned about the kind of content they can access, how frequently they access it, and so on. While parental controls aren’t new, earlier this year Google announced Family Link that offered parents more control over their child’s Android devices.

However when it was announced, the tool was only available via invite-only, but the good news is that Google has since announced that they will be opening it up to all Android users. According to Google, “Today, we’re happy to announce that Family Link, our solution for bringing kids and their parents into the Android ecosystem, is now available to parents in the United States without an invitation. Parents can also create a Google Account for their kid right from Android setup, and then manage their kid’s account and device with Family Link.”

In case you’re learning about Family Link for the first time, users will be able to manage the kind of apps their kids can use, and can approve and block apps that their kids can download from the Google Play Store. Parents will also be able to keep an eye on screen time to see how long their kids spend on apps, as well as set daily limits.

Read: How to get paid apps for free on Android
Google also realizes that parents may have iPhones while their kids have Android phones. For many families, Android is a cheaper way to get their kids online faster. With that in mind, parents can find the parental app for Family Link in the iTunes app store.

Family Link works on kids phones running Marshmallow (Android 6.0) or better. The parental app is available for parents running anything Kit Kat (Android 4.4) or better.

Family Link’s key features are:

  • Manage the apps your kid can use: Approve or block the apps your kid wants to download from the Google Play Store.
  • Keep an eye on screen time: See how much time your kid spends on their favorite apps with weekly or monthly activity reports, and set daily screen time limits for their device.
  • Set device bedtime: Remotely lock your kid’s device when it’s time to play, study, or sleep.

You can find out more at the official Family Link website

How to Protect your Instagram account from Hack

Six million Instagram accounts have been exposed online after hackers created a dark web database of personal information, revealing private phone numbers and email addresses.
                                     Instagram hack security
The scale of the hack  on instagram emerged after the Instagram account of singer Selena Gomez was compromised last week. UK security researchers discovered hundreds of contact details on the dark web of celebrities including Emma Watson, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.

In addition to leaking the details of hundreds of Elites, hackers created an online database where cyber criminals could access private user details for $10 per search.
Instagram initially said a "low percentage" of accounts had been affected, although the hackers claim they have details on as many as six million users, the Daily Beast reported.

Instagram has since responded with its advice on how to protect accounts and report suspicious activity.

The hackers, claiming to be Russian and calling themselves "Doxagram", advertised the account details on online forums with links to the dark web, claiming "it is only $10 (price of 2 cups of coffee) for celebrity contact info".

One website linked to the hack has since been taken down, with Facebook, which owns Instagram, purchasing domain names used by the hackers to take them offline.

An official Instagram account for the President of the United States of America, run by the White House social media team, was also reported to be among the exposed details.

"We quickly fixed the bug, and have been working with law enforcement on the matter," said Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger. He added account passwords had not been exposed by the security flaw.

UK cybersecurity company RepKnight identified 500 celebrity accounts that had been compromised by the hack.
                                        Instagram hack 2017 Celebrities hacked
"While Instagram has now fixed the bug that lead to the leak, the cat is out of the bag now, and those affected will have to take extra care to maintain their privacy," said RepKnight analyst Patrick Martin.

How was the data stolen?

The potential vulnerability on Instagram was found by researchers at Kaspersky Labs and reported to Facebook.

A flaw in the password reset option in the Instagram mobile app exposed mobile phone numbers and email addresses, but not passwords. The simple attack involved sending a request for a password reset to an account and intercepting the private phone and email details sent in response to the security query.

The vulnerability existed in a 2016 version of Instagram, meaning those with up-to-date accounts should be safe.

How to protect yourself on Instagram

Instagram has since offered its official advice on what to do if your account has been affected. Instagram said users should exercise additional caution if they receive any calls or emails from unknown or suspicious sources.

"Additionally, we’re encouraging you to report any unusual activity through our reporting tools," Instagram said. "You can access those tools by tapping the “…” menu from your profile, selecting 'Report a Problem' and then 'Spam or Abuse.'"

Instagram has a page which offers users advice on how best to keep their account protected and what to do if they think an account has been hacked. Users should change their password or send themselves a password reset email if they think they have been affected.

It also suggests users turn on two-factor authentication on their accounts for added protection.

How to turn on two-factor protection on Instagram

Go to the settings tab in the top right corner of your profile
Scroll down and select "two-factor authentication"
Tap "require security code"
You will then need to add a phone number to your account
After this a code will be sent to your phone number every time you try to log into your account

How to Pick a password

Don’t re-use passwords. One ultra-secure one won’t be any good if someone finds it
While combining upper and lower case passwords with numbers to alter a memorable word - M4raD0na - is often advised, these are more easily cracked than you might think
Good advice is to make a long but memorable “passphrase”. String a few words together that you can remember with a visual. “puffineatingbanana” is easy to remember but would take millions of years for a computer to crack
Alternatively, you can use a password manager such as 1Password, which can generate secure passwords and store them online
The best way to protect yourself is to use two-factor authentication, which will send a text with a code or use an app to verify your log-in

While this can keep an account safe from hackers, the information taken from Instagram included user phone numbers, showing that not all data is safe when stored online or even kept private.

Zello App: Makes your phone a Walkie Talkie allowing you make calls when Phone reception is poor

Zello App turns smartphones into "walkie talkies" has topped Apple's App Store after one million people downloaded in preparation for the onslaught of Hurricane Irma. The Zello app was first released in Russia under a different name back in 2007.
zello-All you do is press the button and then speak
Zello is a communications app which lets people stay in touch when their reception is poor.
Although it doesn't work when there's absolutely no mobile signal, it uses less bandwidth than normal phone calls and can work when reception is very poor.

Alexey Gavrilov, founder of Zello, wrote: "We have seen a large number of people signing up for Zello in preparation for Hurricane Irma.

"Over 1 million people have joined in the last day, with most coming from Puerto Rico and Florida."

However, he said that Zello would only work when there was still a phone signal.

"If there is no wifi and no cellular data service, communication apps (including Zello) won’t work," he added.

"However, this may not be an issue because, historically, mobile data networks have often remained at least partially operational, even after a severe disaster.
zello app allows you to talk to other people who are nearby
"Cellular towers include battery or generator backup power, which lets them stay online for at least 2 hours, even after grid power is lost."
Read:  How to Protect your Instagram account from Hack
"While Zello has been helpful in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, it is not a hurricane rescue tool and is only as useful as the people who use it, and as reliable as the data network available."

Zello is available for iPhone, Blackberry and even Windows desktop computers.

How To Watch YouTube Videos on 9mobile Network for Free (Free Browsing)

Streaming YouTube videos is absolutely free with 9mobile CLIQ4DNITE … but with conditions attached! This was announced some days back on their twitter handle.
                                                             Youtube-9mobile-streaming
When you get any of 9mobile monthly data plans, Youtube video streaming is absolutely free for you from the hour of 1am - 5am. A very good reason why they have chosen this odd hour for this free youtube streaming is not far fetched, as Midnight is an offPeak period, where they have less load on their network, since most people would be asleep. It would be cool though if it was around 10pm – 5am?
This must definitely be for Vigilante night surfers or those that find it difficult to sleep at night. This is a good development and I must commend 9mobile for it, because there are really a lot to learn from streaming on YouTube. Those that always watch movies on YouTube at night will find this handy.

Note: If you face any difficulty streaming at midnight (1-5am) YouTube videos for free as promised by 9mobile, change your internet settings APN from etisalat to 9mobile and you are good to go.

Why is my Phone Overheating so Quickly? Try These Fix

Is your cell phone getting excessively hot lately? well there are so many factors that cause overheating, since our phones are electronic devices, it is normally for it to get warm from time to time. however, danger arises when it gets so hot that you feel it is about to burn a hole in your pocket or it shuts itself down.
This guide would highlight the various causes, effects and proper solution to over-heating of our smartphones.
                                    my Phone Overheating

What causes Over-heating of our Phones

Weather and Direct sunlight

During the hot season or summer, the external temperature of the environment and direct sunlight affects that of our phones, because most of the internal components of our phones are metallic, and metals respond easily to any change in temperature.

Too Many Apps Running In The Background

Allowing applications that you are not using to run in the background, increases the temperature of your phone, and runs down the battery. On an iPhone for example, you can simply press your home button twice and swipe the apps away. Closing these down not only saves battery but also decreases how hard your phone works, which in turn decreases heat.

The Level of Your Phone Brightness

This is very similar to running background apps; turning your brightness up will affect battery, forcing it to work harder. Instead of turning your brightness up, buy a glare screen. You’ll be able to use your phone in the sun no matter how bright it is.

Heavy streaming

Watching videos and other media content online is one of the things that make smartphones so great. Watching a movie when traveling can make the time go by a lot faster. Watching movies and playing videos constantly however require more work from the phones processor and not only can it consume a lot of power but it can cause things to get warmer too, especially that of a higher resolution.

Heavy gaming

There are so many fun and entertaining games available these days. However, some of these games and applications require more processing power than others depending on the complexity of the app and when you add this required processing power with lengthy usage then things can start to heat up a bit.
You have to remember that many games may require other resources from your phone as well. Many apps require a data connection which means that your phone not only has to run the game but also an internet connection through mobile data or Wi-Fi data.

Other causes of a phone over-heating is a bad battery, poor ventilation, water damage, outdated software, damaged hardware etc.

Effects of  Cellphone Overheating.

overheating affects your phone's performance. This is due to an effect called throttling. Throttling is a process in which if your processor gets above it's threshold temperature or the max temp at which it can work without getting any kind of damage to itself , then in that case CPU frequency is brought down so as to protect CPU from getting overheated beyond its threshold. And if your CPU frequency gets lowered then obviously it won't be able to process the instructions at a much faster rate at which it was able to process it previously hence performance will get hampered or the speed will go down.
Smartphones have many electronic components which deteriorate over time. Overheating adds to this deterioration.

Processors are smart so when they get overheated, they are programmed to reduce the clock rate at such times(this is why you see lags after playing heavy games for longer periods) to reduce the heat produced.
So over heating will temporarily slow down your phone and may also have ill-effects in a long run.Besides these batteries are worst affected by the heat. The life of the battery is shortened to a great extent. Phones and batteries are becoming thinner so the risk is much higher as the space for heat dissipation inside the phone.

10 ways To cool Down Your Android Phone

cool Down Your Android Phonecool Down Your Android Phone

Stop Overusing the Phone

Instead of blaming the Android phone for overheating, let’s check our usage habits first. Smartphones are powerful, but they are not made for continuous use unlike gaming consoles or PCs . Simply because they have limited cooling system (and space) and they depend on a battery that generates more heat.

Overheating Battery

A defective battery is the most common reason for phone overheating. Your phone might be fine, but if your phone battery is overheating then it could heat up the whole phone. To detect a faulty battery, see if the back of your phone is overheating more than the other areas. Also, try taking out battery and compare how much it is hot as compared to the phone.
Also you can check your cell phone temperature monitor with this code *#*#4636#*#* on most android phones
or this app

Android Phone Overheating While Charging

make sure the phone is not put in a suffocating place while charging, like under the pillow. As charging is already creating heat, more heating resources could lead to overheating the phone.

Also keep in mind to never charge and use a heavy application/game simultaneously on a phone. Charging phone generates heat and a heavy software leads to forcing all phone components to heat up, this can overheat your phone.

Your Android Phone’s Case

Cases are usually made of insulator material, like plastic or leather. Such material can keep the heat inside and cold outside, leading to overheating. Remove the case of the phone and use it to see if it still gets hot.

Malware and Viruses

A malware could also be the cause of overheating because such malicious programs are not configured to be easy on the resources. Download Avast Mobile Security & Antivirus and scan your phone for any malware or viruses.

Control Background Apps

Many apps run in the background to offer their features, so even if you close them; they are still using resources and heating up the phone. You can go to Settings > Apps > Background Apps to see all the apps running in the background and stop them. However, I will recommend you to try out free Greenify app for Android that can automate this process.

Use Clean Master To Cool Down Your Phone

Clean Master is an amazing Android app that offers all the features you need to minimize resource usage and cool down your phone. It has a cooler option that automatically detects phone heating up and prompt you to press the button to cool it down. This feature will automatically find apps that are overheating the phone and stop them.

Playing with Phone Features and Settings

Continuous use of Wi-Fi can heat up the phone. Turn off Wi-Fi every now and then when you are not using it to ease things up.
Refrain from using resource hungry apps. DU Phone Cooler app can help find resource hungry apps that may be causing overheating and let you disable or uninstall them.
Keep bluetooth off all the time, unless needed.

Turn off vibration (of any kind) if it isn’t necessary.

Turn down brightness, more brightness mean more pressure on battery; and it is bad for your eyes as well.

Avoid using the phone as hotspot.

If your phone storage is too close to full, then delete some of the data. More data slows down the phone and also contributes to heating.
Don’t go overboard with widgets, only use the one that are necessary. Widgets use resources to update information in real-time.

Android Phone Overheating During Call

On average, 1 hour of continuous call should make the phone warm, but not hot enough to be of any danger.

Try to keep your calls below an hour with extended breaks in between. If you find your phone to be heating up rather quickly, then use headphones or Speaker to make a call without touching the phone. There is a chance your phone’s speakers might be damaged as well, you will have to get them checked from a phone repairer if you have any doubts.

Give a Safe Environment To Your Phone

External environment also play an important role. Make sure your phone is away from any type of heating sources, this includes warm clothes, your pocket, your backpack, the Sun, pillow and anything that could transmit heat to your phone. If your phone is still overheating, put it in front of a fan to help it cool down faster.
In conclusion, Over usage of phone is usually the main reason for occasional overheating. However, if your phone is continuously overheating, then the battery or a malware could be the reason. Furthermore, if you have a very old phone, then upgrading to a newer phone is the best option to fix overheating phone issue.

how to turn off the "new map" Feature on Snapchat

The New Snap Map feature, part of a regular update, allows users to share their location with friends using a searchable map and it is tagged as a fun way to share snaps of public events.

But, tech commentators have been quick to point out that it shows a user's location every time they open the app, not just when posting 'Snaps for Our Story'.
                                   turn-off-snap-map

Reasons to turn Off The New Snap Map

* Your partner says they've got work to do at home and can't meet up in the evening as planned. You open Snapchat that night and see your partner is somewhere else chilling.

* By leaving the app on, you broadcast your location and other users could easily find out where you live.

* You keep bumping into your Ex in public places and you can't figure out how they know where you're going to be. Little do you know, your ex is stalking you using Snap Map.

* Your friends tell you they're not available and you think nothing of it until you open Snapchat and see most of them are in the same place. Later on, you find out they're at a party and you weren't invited.
* You take a 'mental health day' from work and decide to hit the beach and read. You're friends with the boss on Snapchat... and she can see you are at the beach.

How To Turn off Snap Maps

                                                  snap-map-ghostmode
Snap Maps is technically opt-in. It doesn't take effect until you update the app and go through its new updated features. Once you do that, though, it's fairly straightforward (as far as Snapchat goes) to opt-out of sharing your location with others. If you’re opening the app for the first time after the update, Snapchat will walk you through a step-by-step tutorial on how to use the Snap Map. First, it’ll show you how to pinch and zoom in the camera tool to access the map. Next, it’ll ask who you want to see your location.
You get three choices: all your friends, select friends, or only me. Choosing “only me” activates what Snapchat calls Ghost Mode. This makes your avatar disappear from others’ maps; you can see others but they can’t see you. Great for crooks! But remember,  your phone’s sensors can still track your location.
To turn off location data altogether, you’ll need to visit your phone's settings where you can scroll down to Snapchat, click on “location” and choose to never share.
If you’ve already gone through the tutorial and want to change who can see you on their map, that's easy, too.
Open Snap Map and click on the setting menu in the right hand corner, where you can decide who gets the privilege of tracking your every move.

How to track a phone and make it Ring on silent mode

This Post will show you How to track a phone and make it Ring on silent mode, especially when you have misplaced it or kept it somewhere you can't remember.
There are few apps on the Play store that can help you track a phone, but to keep things simplified, I would only mention two applications today.

Steps on How to track a phone on silent mode
1.     Most important: Install a tracking app!

Treehouse - Ring MyDroid

 ring_my_droid
The Treehouse - Ring My Droid application has a SMS-triggered alarm system. When you install the app, you are asked to set a Key Phrase.

Whenever you forget where you left your phone and can’t find it because it’s set on silent mode, just use another phone to SMS your Key Phrase to it.

Once the phone receives the Key Phrase as a SMS message, it starts to ring even if it is kept on silent mode! Now just follow the sound and find your phone. Easy!

--Precautions--
By default, the Key Phrase is set to Treehouse. Change it to whatever you want and click the Set button. It is highly recommended that you set a new Key Phrase.

Your Key Phrase is like your password. Keep it with you, otherwise people or some prankster friends may SMS you your Key Phrase and set off your alarm anytime! ;)

NB: The app is great if you install it before your phone is lost, however, the app does not work until you press the "SET" button after opening the app.

Cerberus antitheft

Cerberus is a complete anti-theft application, the best protection you can get to recover your misplaced, lost or stolen Android device. It's not just a "find my phone" app or a phone tracker (locator), Cerberus has many unique features that make it the perfect app to locate your phone or tablet, identify the thief and get back your device.
It has three ways to protect your device. These are the "3 heads" of Cerberus:
- Remote control through the website
- Remote control via SMS (text messages) from another phone
- Automatic alerts.

REMOTE CONTROL

Remote control allows you to perform many operations on your lost or stolen device, like:
- Locate and track it
- Lock the device with a code
- Start a loud alarm, even if the device is set to silent mode
- Display a message that stays on the screen, and also make your device speak the message
- Take pictures, screenshots and even record videos, to identify the thief
- Get the location history, to see where the device has been in the past
- Wipe the internal memory and the SD card, to protect your personal data
- Hide Cerberus from the app drawer, so the app will be stealthy and a thief will not see the icon
- Record audio from the microphone
- Get a list of last calls sent and received
- Get information about cell phone network and WiFi network the device is connected to, and nearby WiFi networks
- Start a remote shell (SSH-like), to execute commands as if the device were connected to your computer with a USB cable
- And much more!

AUTOMATIC ALERTS

Cerberus can automatically perform actions when some conditions are met. For instance, it will send email/SMS alerts if the SIM card is changed (see the "SIM checker" section of the settings) and it will email you a photo of the thief when a wrong unlock code is entered (section "Automatic photo capture").
You can also set your own rules, see the "AutoTask" section! From there you can set geofencing (alerts when the phone exits or enters an area) and a lot of more automatic actions and alerts.

ADVANCED FEATURES

From within the app configuration, you can enable some options to make difficult for the thief to disable or uninstall Cerberus. Make sure to enable the "Device Administration" functionality and the "Protect device admin" option. Also you can block the Power Menu to prevent the thief from shutting down the device, and block access to the status bar in the lock screen, so nobody would be able to change the quick settings in Lollipop (Android 5.0) and later versions.

If you have rooted your device you can install Cerberus as a system application and get many additional features, including complete uninstall protection (Cerberus will survive a factory reset) and GPS auto-enabling when you start tracking the device. The app works even if the device does not have an internet connection thanks to remote control by sms messages. Also, the SIM Checker feature allows you to know the new number to send texts to, if the SIM card is changed.

If you have an Android Wear smartwatch, make sure to check the "Wearable device" section of the app settings: you will find many useful and cool features.

Please read the Help page on their website, it has the answers to the most frequently asked questions.

2.     Activate Android Device Manager (ADM) and Location History
Make sure that both ADM and Location History are activated. Both tools can be a great help when you lose your device. With ADM you can track your device, make it ring and erase its data. Location history shows you the last recorded locations on a map. If someone stole it, then this could help you (and local authorities) to track down the thief’s home address, for example.
To activate both services, select “Google Settings” in your app drawer. Select Security and make sure both options below “Android Device Manager” are enabled. Now, go one step back and select “Location”. Click on “Google Location History” and turn it on. Now you’re able to use ADM to track your device and Location History to see its last recorded locations.
3.     Set A Lock Screen Pattern or password
Quite a lot of people already use lock screens to keep unwanted people from accessing private files like images, texts or videos. For some people, unlocking a phone countless times a day can be quite annoying, but it’s worth it. This added security not only keeps your friends and colleagues from secretly checking out your latest images or texts.
It also prevents thieves of changing any major settings such as disabling mobile data or disconnecting your phone from your Google account, or uninstalling some important apps.
So, Having a tracking/anti-theft app on your phone greatly increases the chances of getting it back.
We’ld love to hear from you, which tracking app do you currently use?
